TUNNEL FILTRATION BACKFLIP (Media release from CCTAG)
Inner city residents have been warned to beware Minister Scully's promises following the RTA's latest backflip on tunnel filtration.
"We have been conned in one of the most cynical exercises in deception the public will ever experience", said Elizabeth George of the Cross-City Tunnel Action Group.
Her outburst followed a briefing from Garry Humphrey of the RTA to the Air Quality Community Consultative Committee for the Cross City Tunnel.
"After heavy questioning from community members he finally acknowledged that there was no commitment to filtering any Sydney tunnel", said Ms George.
"There is a commitment to pilot "filtration technology". This means testing a piece of equipment, but there is absolutely no commitment to filtering a whole tunnel" she said.
"The RTA's behaviour is outrageous. Mr Humphrey is still denying that there are air quality problems in the M5 East tunnel" she said.
The communities of Rozelle, Haberfield, Canada Bay Ashfield and Leichhardt were promised filtration of the M4 East tunnel, should it go ahead, at the same time Minister Scully announced that he would trial tunnel filtration.
"I warn inner city communities affected by the M4 East not to take the Roads Minister at his word. The RTA's potential for deceit and manipulation of the facts seems to be limitless."
