The Carr M5 East Exhaust Stack - A Monument to Bad Planning and Foul Air

Reclaim Turrella Rally and Street Party Saturday 26th August 8am-1pm

Instead of rejecting a design fraught with problems, the EPA and DUAP have bowed to political pressure and sold out communities in Sydney's inner south west. DUAP has approved an unfiltered stack at least 35m high in the bottom of the Turrella valley, with a promise of retrofitting filtration equipment if needed down the track.

This decision flies in the face of CSIRO advice released last Monday predicting that both a 25 or a 35 metre stack would cause unacceptably high levels of pollution on the local area, with cancer causing particles possibly double the RTA estimate. It also ignores the findings of the Parliamentary Inquiry, the International Tunnel Ventilation workshop their own departmental investigations and community opposition.

Instead of filtering the emissions from the outset, the government proposes to buy-back or replace solid fuel heaters in the area as a way of improving local air quality!

Hundreds of angry residents will reclaim Turrella for a Street Party 8am-1pm at the M5 East Stack Construction Site, Henderson St Turrella

Speakers include State MP's Lee Rhiannon, and Dr Arthur Chesterfield Evans.

They will be joined by representatives from communities in Darling Harbour, CastleCrag, Lane Cove and East Sydney who also refuse to be stacked.

Main speeches and visual activities 9.30-11.00. The crowd will vent their anger on a life size replica of Mr Scully and a smoking stack.

Music, Sausage sizzle and a range of family activities with a stack theme are planned
