RTA Planning Modifications

The RTA has applied to the Department of Planning to modify the operating conditions for the M5 tunnel.
The main change requested is to allow unfiltered portal emissions from both Bexley North and Arncliffe for 14 hours per day to help improve in-tunnel conditions.
The RTA proposal is aimed solely at improving in-tunnel conditions for motorists.
NSW Health has expressed severe concerns about the likely adverse impacts on the health of residents around the portals.

I determined that the M5 East roadway was a good thing and that it should go through. There will be one stack at Turrella and the road goes through."

23Mar1999 - The RTA is required to give 7 Days notice to the Environmental Defenders Office if they are to proceed with substantial work. Just how substantial does this look ???.

20Mar1999 - Community concern is growing. Just metres from the RAPS rally, a street party organised independently, and not a part of the RAPS rally, by a group called "Reclaim the Streets", took over Bexley Rd. After our rally, RAPS and its supporters joined in the fun.

19Mar1999 - Todays meeting with Carl Scully was very productive, and Mr Scully was genuinely concerned about the issues we raised. He is very interested in the report Dr Noel Childs is to present to Canterbury Council next month, and following that report, Mr Scully would like to meet again with RAPS. Overall, it was a very positive meeting.

11Mar1999 - After almost 2 years of constant letters, protests, and a public outrage by listeners of ABC Radio after an Interview with Bob Carr on Wednesday 10March, Carl Scully has finally agreed to meet RAPS residents on Friday 19th March. So what has it taken to get this far ?.

08Mar1999 - Farrer Place came alive, as the residents of Earlwood, Bardwell Park, Turrella, and surrounding suburbs demanded to be heard. We were told that the Government did not want to arrange a meeting with us today or any other day, which only tells us that they dont want to know. Well Mr Carr, and Mr Scully, we will fight to the very end, and if you think we are going to give up, forget it, we are more determined and more committed than ever !!!.

28Feb1999 - Critical Mass rides out in support of M5 East Stack critics (Press/News Release)

26Feb1999 - Protest Rally at "Gough Whitlam Park". In a very emotional, and passionate Protest Rally, Residents, Motorists, and Protesters are joined by "Critical Mass", who ride in to show their support.

25Feb1999 - Canterbury Council Meeting. The Meeting at Canterbury Council can only be described as interesting. Peter Siapos gave an excellent address to the council, and thanked them for their continued public support. He also requested specific actions to show this support in practical ways. We asked the council to approach Mr Carr, and Mr Scully and urge them to address residents' concerns on the issue, as so far they have ignored, or avoided our concerns everytime we have tried to approach them.

Councillor "Ian Latham" expressed concern that R.A.P.S is being infiltrated by political influences, and it was stated very clearly that this is not the case. R.A.P.S is a community based group made up of Residents whose only concern is to find a viable solution to the one stack proposal. It is not in any way a political group, and will not be influenced by, or endorse any political party hoping for point scoring as the state election draws closer.

R.A.P.S requested a Banner be erected in "Homer Street Earlwood" to show the residents of Earlwood that the council supports them in their fight to get rid of the Stack, this will be looked into. It was also requested that the council distributes leaflets to all residents in all languages with information on the Smoke Stack, and that it states its support to not have this killer stack constructed..

23-24Feb1999 - TAGAM Supreme Court Hearing, Queens Square. The Judges are "Tony Fitzgerald", "Keith Mason", "Sheller.Any support welcome. . The court case was mounted by TAGAM, an anti-motor way group who had taken the RTA to court claiming that the final M5East proposal was very different from the origingal one, on a number of issues, including the stack. They lost in December, as the judge found that basically the 'activity' was still the same, with modifications. This is now being challenged in an appeal to the Supreme Court, with 3 judges hearing the case. Patrick Larkin, solicitor for TAGAM gave his summing up today 25Feb, and it is now a waiting game until they give their findings. We will keep you updated as soon as news comes to hand. TAGAM needs to pay for this action too. it may be as high as $15 000 so they need your donations

21Feb1999 - Protest Rally held at Turella Reserve. A Crowd of over 500 people turned up at Turella Reserve in what can only be described as an overwhelming success. Organisers and residents alike united to keep the fight well and truely alive to Stop The Stack. From the support and outrage displayed by the crowd, the State Government, and the R.T.A. have just been given One very big wake-up call. Its time Mr Carr, and Mr Scully stood up and be counted !.

09Feb1999 - Rockdale Council meeting 7.30pm Coronation Hall Arncliffe. This meeting was convened by Rockdale Council, and the purpose of the meeting was for the council to re-afirm its position in its representaion of its residents. The hall was totally packed out, and all major groups had their say on the issue. Rockdale council will continue its fight to help find a viable solution to this problem, and has promised its support. We are still waiting for the meetings minutes.

30Jan1999 - Protest meeting Saturday 30th Jan at St George Leages Club 0830am Kogarah. Bob Carr blew the protesters a kiss when he arrived, and snuck out the back exit to avoid the protesters after the breakfast. With that kiss he blew away any respect we might have had for him, and clearly showed the protesters where he stands on the issue. Later when we confronted him in Kogarah, he once again avoided the issue by shugging his shoulders when asked question, and saying nothing, he was quickly whisked off in a waiting car.

28Jan1999 - Meeting at Canterbury Council, it was agreed to employ the services of Noel Childs. The council upon the findings of Mr Childs report will decided on a stratergy and hopefully vote to totally support the Residents in their fight to find a viable solution for not only those in Earlwood, but all surrounding suburbs.
