Saturday January 30th, 1999.
Today as support for
the 'Stop the Stack" campaign strengthened, Protesters
attempted to take their message to
Bob Carr in a
peaceful rally at the "St Georges Leagues Club" in
Kogarah. Mr Carr was to be there to address a breakfast meeting.
The rally was in the hope that Mr Carr would recognise our
concerns and give us a few minutes of his time to hear what we
had to say. When Mr Carr finally arrived he got out of his car
turned around at the protesters, and blew them a kiss, then
proceeded into the club for breakfast with his party faithful
There was a feeling of total disappointment and sheer anger at
the arrogance of Mr Carr's attitude, which he displayed to the
very people who have supported him over the years and are now
desperately reaching out to him, for his help and support.
After learning that Mr Carr had snuck out the back exit after the
breakfast to
avoid the protesters, the Rally then moved
to the Kogarah Labour office of Cherie Burton, as Mr Carr was due
to meet and greet the locals of Kogarah. This time some of the
protesters managed to speak to Mr Carr, and proceeded to ask him
questions on the issue. Mr Carr said nothing but put his hands in
the air, and shrug his shoulders as if to say "Its not my
problem, so tell someone who cares". He was then hurriedly
escorted to a waiting vehicle totally ignoring the protesters
concerns, and very quickly whisked away from having to deal with
the issue.
This is our state leader and we are asking him to give us the same time and consideration that we have given him in our support for the Labour government over the years. The protest was very controlled and orderly, and left everyone feeling very disillusioned with our State Leader and the governments attitude to this very serious Health issue.
We did however get a very
sympathetic ear from the Local Labour Member Cherie Burton. After
taking time out to listen to our concerns and familiarise herself
with the facts presented to her by two representatives of the
Protesters, she requested more information to be sent to her, and
promised that she will try and organise a meeting this week with
"Mr Carl Scully", the minister for roads.
The support to Stop the Stack is
overwhelming, and day by day is gathering momentum. Its time the
Government took us seriously, because we are not going to go
away. We are fighting for what is right, and that is the right to
live in a safe
community with clean air, a community where our children can grow
up without the fear of disease. Where the elderly can enjoy their
retirement without the fear of developing bad health, and where
our families and friends can enjoy this very unique part of
Sydney that has a character and life all of its own. Its a
lifestyle enjoyed by everyone who lives in the area, and envied
by those who dont.
The government is taking the attitude of "Reasonable
losses". Its like a War, they will sacrifice the few to save
the many. From the growing support the few will soon be the many,
then what are the government going to do ?.
